Every day I'm Shovelin', Shovelin'

Snow...
I am grateful we didn't get the heavy wet variety of snow the past 4 or so ( I've lost count) storms that rambled through the North East.  The stuff snow blows fairly good, it's the constant roof raking, shoveling clean-up, moving of cars, salting, sanding, and the chipping off of ice dams that is maddening.

Damn Ice Dams
We're using a combination of ice pucks 2/3 size hockey pucks made of salt either thrown up onto the roof or safe step poured generously behind and on top of the Ice Dams, we use an ingenious invention (I must say) of a coat hanger duct taped to a section of old roof rake, with a SOLO cup duct taped to the coat hanger, this allows Rose to fill the cup with Ice melt salt, then I lift the now full solo cut up and just behind the Ice Dam and twist the pole so the cup rotates dumping its load of salt.  It is working, although I am seeing a couple spots in the house that have leaked.

Barn mostly cleared
I shoveled almost 40" of snow off 2/3rds of the barn roof yesterday. Ugh.

Workshop stressed
Today I am trying to get the aluminum/tin roofed workshop to clear, there's 36' or so covering the roof, I tried to no avail to get the hanging propane heater started, it simply wouldn't maintain a pilot, just before giving up I noticed the construction heater I bought for $10 over last summer at a yard sale.  Gotta love yard sales...  I got a spare propane tank and another lighter and went to town getting it connected pretty quickly.  I never lit this thing so I was a bit leery of it, it says 200,000 BTUs on it.  Once I got my glasses on, yeah go ahead, laugh, you'll be old some day too.   I saw it had a Push to light Piezo lighter built in, and a push to let gas out button.  Here goes nothing... I held the gas light button in and a hiss said I had gas, I clicked the Piezo starter 6 or seven times in rapid succession and it ROARED to life. Wow does this thing throw some heat, 30 minutes later it was 48 degrees, an hour later it was 95 degrees in the shop, I'm 2 hours in so far and no snow movement yet, tried assisting the snow load and it'd have none of that.  The workshop normally clears snow off itself with this winter being so cold I'm guessing it'll take some time.  Fingers crossed...

30 days 'till Spring

With 36 to 48" of snow on the ground and brutal wind chills it's hard to wrap your head around spring in 30 days.  March 20th is the first day of spring.

Fixing the yard hill & Labor day

Fixing the yard hill: Tuesday we're got 8 yards of 3/4" crushed stone, and 18 yards of loam delivered to fix a lot of sloped are...
