Irene is so over

Well, we made it, hopefully you did as well at your house.  So far it appears that we only had one casualty of the storm.  We lost a crab-apple tree, the 6" trunk snapped off at ground level during one of Irene's last good winds, right after the storms wind direction changed.  This could have been much worse, we still have power, it did go out three times but came right back again. Rose's sister in Nashua has been without power since 9am this morning.

Real Time Hurricane Tracker

Cool tracker http://www.nytimes.com/projects/hurricanes/

Hurricane Irene will be here soon enough, lots to do, we got our pellet delivery on Wednesday Rose and I got that wrapped up tight tonight, took down the Cabana and generally tightened anything that looked even remotely loose.

Tomorrow it'll be picking veggies like crazy trying to save as much as we can from the garden.

Tomorrow is also the Goffstown 250th anniversary Block Party so the boys'll be coming over and we'll see what's cooking in Goffstown.

Have to go into work tomorrow night to get all of the servers shut down before the storm.  Let's hope the storm fizzles a bit before that time.

Good Luck to everyone!  Let's hope Irene is a good girl!

Zucchini Cake and a Garden Update August

Rosie baked up a half a dozen zucchini cakes and stored them in the freezer, she left one out for me!

Garden Update August 21st, 2011
We broke out the dehydrator and will start dehydrating some of the herbs, peppers, onions, maybe we'll try some broccoli this year.

The tomatoes are starting to come in now. We definately need to go to larger cages and stakes as a lot of the cages fell over this year, no losses, just harder to pick.

James and Jason's Mammoth Pumpkins have long since taken over the big garden, they have spread more than 25 feet in multiple directions.

The Butternut, Buttercup and Acorn squash are almost ready, the vines are starting to die back now, we've picked a few already. The summer squash is putting out it's last squash this week and the zucchini is almost done as well.

Peppers did well this year for a change.

Kale is doing great, both the curled, and Russian variety are waiting for a good frost.

Gourds are flowering like crazy, if they're going to put out any goards they'd better start soon, just lots of vines and flower so far.

The potato vines are just starting to die back now we're still a month or so away from digging them up yet.

Incoming.......... Tomatoes

The Tomato harvest has begun, we put up most of the peppers that have finally started to grow. The heirloom tomatoes Black Krim, Brandywine, Mortgage Lifter and Polish Sausage are staring to ripen at breakneck speed. It'll soon be tomato sauce season here at the farm. And maybe Chili season too.

Couple of does out last night

Just before the storm hit you could hear the thunder rumbling through Weare towards our house. These two does were probably spooked by an earlier storm that came through and decided it was safer out in the field.

White Tail Doe

Picking vegetables the other night, and this nice doe was out poking around the field. She hung around for a good 15 minutes before something in the neighbors yard spooked her. She jumped the electric fence like it wasn't even there. (It's only on when the horse is out)
