Kale soup today!

The grand kids and I picked the last of the Lacinato kale (Dinosaur Kale) for the rabbits today, then fed the chickens, and lastly the deer herd.

I picked the last of the Dwarf Blue Curled Kale from the raised bed today, and made up a big pot of Kale soup, which I must say was outstanding!  I had a couple bowls as did Rose and the boys, for a late lunch and we put some up in the freezer.  I will need to make another batch as there was just enough left for another dinner for Rose and I.

Jim Jeffery is home again

Jimmy's had a tough time with an infection that attached itself to his heart. After a couple bouts of antibiotics and surgery last week, he's home now. He's got one heck of a scar to show for it too.

The Red efts are coming

Rosie found this little guy headed across the walkway.

From NHFG website: Red efts, the terrestrial phase of the Eastern Newt, are commonly seen out in the open on moist woodland floors. The orange skin of the red-eft warns predators of its toxicity.

He was moving slowly, appx. 4 inches long.

Doe and Field Mower Woes...

Last couple of days we've had a lot of activity, still no coy dogs coming through, the fawns are getting bigger now and could quite possibly outrun the coyote.  Doe left the kids at home on this day...  Yeah, that's my broken down Field and Brush mower sitting out in the field, broken drive cable.

OK, so I slipped one fawn pic in for Mom...

Kids again

This years fawns are getting rambunctious...

Workday today

The Summer sure is going by fast!
Hope you're having a great one!

James, Jason and I picked raspberries this morning, a great big bowl full, I bagged and froze up 4 quarts after cleaning them, then while I mowed the field and Rose weed-wacked the yard the boys picked two bushes clean of Blueberries too!  I watched a chipmunk climbing through one of the wild high bush plants munching Blueberries as fast as he could so our timing was probably just right.  Need to check on the high bush berries tomorrow to see how they are coming along.

Cleaned up some of the flower beds pulling seed heads, bagged them up for next year.

The yard lillies are going crazy with this weather, I still think e could use some more rain... I need to check on the veggie garden and fertilize tomorrow.

Corn, we got some corn from Market Basket earlier in the week, things came up as they often do so it sat on the counter in the bag for 3 days before we got to cook it.  It was great!  Surprised the heck out of me too.

We all went to Kimball's Farm for the second time this year!  Jess, Tony, James & Jason all has fun, James and Jason almost finished a Kimball's special... Yeah I know, but it was good!

We're going to have a raspberry crumble tomorrow, I can't wait.

The Twin Fawns

The Twin Fawns
We're not sure but we may have three new fawns.  We have a doe with one offspring, and looks like a second maybe with twins.  Quality is a little sketchy, as these were taken through the wavy glass windows in the dining room.

The twins playing in the field.

We have a pair of twin fawns

We have a pair of new twin fawns galloping around the field.  We caught them on the trail cam last week,  then the past two or three days out during the day. I'll post some of the pics this weekend.

Now for the not so good news... We also caught a coyote on the trail cam coming through within an hour of mom and the twins  daily as well.  I am due to pull the flash card from the can this weekend.

The twins were still here today so we've got our fingers crossed.

Later...

Fireflies

Fireflies, lightning bugs, whatever you call them, we hit the jackpot this year.

We noticed there appeared to be an abundance of the bugs in the spring before they started lighting up, they were everywhere, harmless but everywhere nonetheless, we'd never seen them in these quantities before, conditions must have been perfect.

Tonight Rose had the boys call me from the living room to see.  The entire back field looked like a concert with tens of thousands of lighters flickering.  I couldn't believe there were so many lighting up, I did notice they were simply flashing in the grass not flying lit up.  Rose said earlier she'd seen them flying up and down in some mating ritual.

I hope they'll continue all summer sure makes the field interesting to look at in the evening.

And the sky darkened... Hailstorm!

MAY 2014 HAILSTORM

Well once again we're behind in getting all of the vegetable gardens in, here we are May 25th and we're still cleaning up, there's always to much to do in the spring... maybe we'll get it planted later this weekend.  Sometimes things happen for a reason, sometimes we just need to listen...

We got a good old fashioned hail storm this evening.  The sky got real dark over towards the Dunbarton/Weare direction, that is never a good thing, all of our bad storms come from that direction.  We heard the thunder then saw the lightning flashing to the Northeast.  I heard the rain start hitting the tin roof on the workshop and ran for the house.

I heard a familiar clicking sound on the windows, HAIL, oh crap

 Dark Skies

 The hailstorm begins
 Amongst the plants out front.
  Hail out in the backyard
Hail everywhere, 1/4" to quarter size.
The storm ended with a nice Rainbow though...

FISHING DERBY - Opening day for trout in NH 2014

FISHING DERBY

Great start to the year, James, Jason, Jarrod and I went Fishing as Saturday is opening day for the state’s designated trout ponds.
We decided to go to the club today for the Deering Fish & Game derby today. What a blast! Yeah it rained... a little rain wasn't stopping us,  and Yes we caught a bunch of fish.  James caught 3, he lost two at the shore, Jason caught three total,  lost one at the shore, caught one smaller 8" or so fish that we released, and one good sized Brookie for dinner.

Lots of families showed up, everyone appeared to be having a great time. Great coffee to keep everyone warm, the boys were doing very well casting, no lines were crossed... no one got hooked except the fish.

I'm not sure, but it looked to me as though everyone caught fish.

James with his nice Brook trout
Jason's Brook Trout!  Great job Jason!
 The Angler...
Fish for dinner...

Well done Deering F&G!  Can't wait for next year.
