Last one today... One more fawn pic.

One more fawn pic.

This little guy has been bombing around the clearing, seems to love jumping around in the mowed grass.  So far we've seen just the two fawns this year, time will tell.

Bunch of new bucks this year

Bunch of new bucks this year

Going through pictures on the trail cam... lots of spikes, a few 4 pointers, then there was this guy, I counted 6 maybe more cant tell if there's a brow tine or not.  Nice looking buck!

They look like porcupines to me... well then again maybe raccoon

Just not sure on these three, the deer are not impressed and chase them off, they came in several times this past month, kinda hoping they aren't porcupines as they are not good for the dogs..  The one on the right looks a bit like he has a ring-tail, and the middle one appears to have a black mask so then I thought Raccoons.

What do you think?  Coon or porcupine?

And Bears Oh My...

Going through the trailcam shots and found this bruiser grabbing a bite to eat.  The salt lick in the photo is a 12"x12" square block for scale.

This could be what Rose heard a couple weeks ago crashing into a aluminum ladder out in the back yard when she opened the back door a couple days ago.  The dogs have been getting very worked up around 10:30pm the same time this pic was taken lately.  We'll have to be a little more careful late at night around here.

The 2015 fawns have arrived!

Rose has been seeing them since fathers day, I saw them run through last night, finding they are just to fast for me, they're gone before I can get a hand on my camera...  caught this shot on the game cam out in the field.

2015 Vole Damage in New Hampshire

Winter 2015

We're off to a tough start for the year, with the subzero temperatures and the three plus feet of snow cover this winter was one for the books.

April has finally arrived, so the snow is melting fast, the rains April are just beginning to add to what should be a short mud season.  Daffodils are up 4" or so, along with the crocuses on the south side.

As the snow melts away the bushes and shrubs are beginning to show some serious damage.

These little Meadow Voles did a tremendous amount of damage to the property this year the conditions in the state were perfect for them, the cleanup begins now.  We've see some of the large apple trees recover from this amount of girdling about 15 years ago over a similar bad winter, the remaining bushes and shrubs may not fair as well.  We lost 12 newly planted apple trees last winter.

Amazing that a critter the size of a mouse can inflict so much damage.  Girdling trees especially younger specimens, (and Large old Apple trees as well) meadow voles have as many as 5 litters of 5 pups a year...

Rose just watched a Red Fox lounging on the edge of the woods on Friday I'm hoping for some help from him in clearing some of the rodent population.  The Red Tailed hawks have been gliding over the fields as well.

We're going to attempt to get a handle on this in short order, wish me luck!

Every day I'm Shovelin', Shovelin'

Snow...
I am grateful we didn't get the heavy wet variety of snow the past 4 or so ( I've lost count) storms that rambled through the North East.  The stuff snow blows fairly good, it's the constant roof raking, shoveling clean-up, moving of cars, salting, sanding, and the chipping off of ice dams that is maddening.

Damn Ice Dams
We're using a combination of ice pucks 2/3 size hockey pucks made of salt either thrown up onto the roof or safe step poured generously behind and on top of the Ice Dams, we use an ingenious invention (I must say) of a coat hanger duct taped to a section of old roof rake, with a SOLO cup duct taped to the coat hanger, this allows Rose to fill the cup with Ice melt salt, then I lift the now full solo cut up and just behind the Ice Dam and twist the pole so the cup rotates dumping its load of salt.  It is working, although I am seeing a couple spots in the house that have leaked.

Barn mostly cleared
I shoveled almost 40" of snow off 2/3rds of the barn roof yesterday. Ugh.

Workshop stressed
Today I am trying to get the aluminum/tin roofed workshop to clear, there's 36' or so covering the roof, I tried to no avail to get the hanging propane heater started, it simply wouldn't maintain a pilot, just before giving up I noticed the construction heater I bought for $10 over last summer at a yard sale.  Gotta love yard sales...  I got a spare propane tank and another lighter and went to town getting it connected pretty quickly.  I never lit this thing so I was a bit leery of it, it says 200,000 BTUs on it.  Once I got my glasses on, yeah go ahead, laugh, you'll be old some day too.   I saw it had a Push to light Piezo lighter built in, and a push to let gas out button.  Here goes nothing... I held the gas light button in and a hiss said I had gas, I clicked the Piezo starter 6 or seven times in rapid succession and it ROARED to life. Wow does this thing throw some heat, 30 minutes later it was 48 degrees, an hour later it was 95 degrees in the shop, I'm 2 hours in so far and no snow movement yet, tried assisting the snow load and it'd have none of that.  The workshop normally clears snow off itself with this winter being so cold I'm guessing it'll take some time.  Fingers crossed...

30 days 'till Spring

With 36 to 48" of snow on the ground and brutal wind chills it's hard to wrap your head around spring in 30 days.  March 20th is the first day of spring.

Crazy Winter Weather & the Deer Herd

There's a wicked storm coming up the coast

From what I'm hearing we're getting 20+ inches of snow Monday the 26th evening into Tuesday evening if the current models are correct.  Good luck with power folks.

Mom and Dad are making a run for Florida tomorrow hoping to miss the storm, they'll run right into it in NY. As long as they grab a hotel when they start getting snow they should be OK.

2915 Deer herd is in great shape, I've never seen so many bucks.

Not quite sure possible 8 Pointer, though I don't see a brow tine.

Girls are looking good

James & Jason helping feed the herd

Count 'em  10 points...

Little 3 point spike.

Birds love the wildlife grains too.  Now if I can just get the Turkeys that came through last year back again...

Nice shot

I liked this one too.

Coyote (This one's got a tail)

The girls...  at least 6 here the past couple weeks

They sure do have a nice coat this time of year!
