Old Man

 

It was 21 years ago last Friday the Old Man of the Mountain fell down... hard to believe it was that long ago, I remember driving up there with my parents and family on vacation straining to to be first one to see it every time.

Saturday we were off to the bank, and to the grocery store to pick up a couple items I missed on Friday night.

Saturday was a field mow day Rose earlier in the week went around all the bushes and trees with her DR weed-wacker making my job much easier! 4-5 deer came in in the evening, Winston was a good boy and left them alone when he went out trotting over to the side hill and just watching them.

We're hearing and sometimes seeing the Orioles daily now.

We're off to the Fireworks store on Sunday, so much fun!  It's the adult version of a kids candy store.

Rose said a burst of mosquitos hatched earlier in the week, I put out Mosquito dunks in all our water sources last weekend.  According to the EPA, Mosquito dunks with Bti contains spores that produce toxins that only affect the larvae of the mosquito, black-fly and fungus gnat.

Our hummingbirds arrived this week, Rose has two feeders out already

Rose thinks Jack or another sparrow is roosting on the back porch.  I haven't seen anyone there yet.

We lost internet access Tuesday, neighbor was having several huge trees cut down, we called her she still had internet.  So I called support they said I was one of the folks that had not updated their router to DHCP, fairly straight forward configuration change and I had internet again.

Sometimes you just have to go with the flow when plans are not working out.

Dad's plum tree he gave us years back is flowering, they smell amazing, you can smell them across the yard, you smell the one beside the barn as soon as you get out of the car.  These trees are crazy, they pop up 20' from the main tree apparently spreading via the roots popping up all around it. 

Appears the bears have moved away from our house, at least for now, this is further up the road, Goldilocks and the 3 bears...

Earlier in the day, NOAA documented an even stronger solar flare, classified as a strong X2.2 flare.

Winston still gets Rose's shoe in the kitchen by the door, he'll give it to Rose most times unless he decides keep away is more fun, she's got him fetching her other show now.

We put the Gazebo top on today, should be fun with the black flies... The black flies stayed away, it was cold with the wind though.

 

We didn't see the Northern lights on Saturday night or at 4AM on Sunday AM either, maybe next time.

The “classified documents” case against President Trump is falling apart. The Special Council prosecuting the case, Jack Smith, admitted in a court filing that his team altered or manipulated the documents seized by the FBI from Trump’s Mar-A-Lago home. Last Sunday was the first time this year we're doing a complete poop patrol of the yard, it's got to get done! TMI?

What? Bird Flu season already? I haven't taken down my COVID lights yet...

Winston chewed off an outdoor extension cord end, no it wasn't plugged in.  Picked up a new end at Ace Hdwr. to replace it.

How do starlings form perfect synchrony and swirl into complex patterns in the sky?

                 I'd probably crash my car if I saw this while driving... amazing!

WINSTON STRIKES AGAIN... Our black lab Winston does it again...

Monday evening Rose and I had finished dinner, I went in to unload the clean dishes from the dishwasher and load it up with the dirty dishes on the sink sideboard. I'd chastised Winston at least 3 times as I reloaded the dishwasher to keep out of there, (he likes to try and lick the plates). I'd just finished loading it, was rinsing out the sink and hear the loudest god-awful crashing I'd ever heard, I turned to see Winston tearing around the kitchen island heading out of the kitchen trailing the nearly full entire lower dishwasher tray loaded with dishes and silverware with him, it crashed into the fridge and dumped all the dishes and silverware slamming up against the stove as he went.  I finally yelled loud enough to get his attention catching him in the middle of the dining room, I carefully unhooked the dishwasher tray that has caught up in his dog collar and released him. Rose put him in the living room and closed the gate as we commenced clearing up all the shattered plates, saucers, and picked up all the silverware that was strewn about before reloading the machine once again.  Maybe he'll think twice before trying to get to the dishes again.  Nah, he's a Lab...  It was chasing after him...  Kinda wish I had that on video.    The End!

Rose was out clearing all the lawn furniture out of the Barn Tuesday

Rose and I watched "Fallout" Season 1, all 8 episodes on Amazon Prime, we finished the series Tuesday evening and can't wait for season two.

Early Thursday morning the four bears were back at the house again around 12:30 AM, Zeb was up scratching at the bedroom door, I let him in, he settled down after an hour or so. I heard one of the bears huff outside the bedroom window, Zeb does not like the bears at all. I figure there's not a lot of food available this early in the season for four large bears to eat, we're hoping they move on soon.

Jason and James came over on Thursday to help out on the farm cleaning out the old turkey pen.. We need to get rid of a bunch of old tires and hit the dump to get rid of metal scrap we hit Home depot to buy some plywood and grass seed. The boys were as always a big help!  They got the stall cleared while I hauled the trailers of straw and manure out to the field.

Friday 4AM Rose said don't let Zeb out, he'd been up for an hour running around in the house whining, I waited until it got light out.

We took a ride to Manchester for 1/2" plywood, well that's what it used to be called anyway, now it's called 15/32" plywood, jeez, it's $27.78 a sheet, some grass seed $40 a bag ugh, 12 bags of bark mulch and the trailer was loaded.

Jason stayed on Friday helping with the driveway mess from the plow, he also finished up the turkey pen while Rose worked on all the chair cushions.  We took Jason to Ollie's for dinner.

The weeping cherry is in full bloom, Rose said it was covered in bees on Friday as Jason worked on filling in some of the holes Winston dug trying his best to get to China.  

A fleeting spring glimpse of the yard,  sometimes we forget to actually look at what we've done and how truly beautiful nature can be.

Jason and I will work on the Turkey pen Saturday putting up plywood walls over the chicken wire. Jason and I finished the turkey pen, the it was off to do a little food shopping, and pick up 10 more bags of mulch at HD, a bag of potting soil, and some bug spray. The plant prices at HD are crazy, $14 for a potted rosemary plant and $4.99 for a single tomato plant. Yikes...

The black flies have arrived and they are hungry!

Today Jason and I worked on repairing an extension cord, and a hose end that Winston ate, we hit the grain store for a couple bales of shavings and two bags of  "Wildlife grains" feed that everyone likes.

We turned on the outside water line for the faucet on Sunday, we put the gazebo top on the clothesline and Rose cleaned it up. Rosie tried to waterproof it Monday but, she ran out so I stopped at HD to pick up 3 more cans of the silicone spray, the weather's nice though.

We are all sitting in almost boiling water, but a lot of us are not noticing it. We are, or most of us are, in a spiral of deteriorating situations in our own regional settings and in worldwide settings, where events are happening faster and faster.
