So this is Christmas...

Christmas morning, beautiful sunny day I'm up at 8am, coffee's on, wife is up, as is daughter in law, Son and the twins are still sleeping. Nice weather, fed the barn animals giving each a piece of berry bagel they love and a couple handfuls of Cheerios for good measure, Lacey the goat loves her carbs. Twins woke in a good mood, did great opening way to many presents, they were afraid of the automated walk and talk Tickle me Ernie, and an Eyore stuffed animal that sings and flaps it's ears.

We went to my parents a couple nights ago, they got me a deer block, basically deer feed in a block for to attract and feed them out in the field.

Christmas day I got a lot of camping gear, survival bag for the cars a 1 million candlepower rechargeable spotlight and one of the games for the PC I've been wanting.

Merry Christmas to All!

Nor'easter 2007 12-16-2003

Woke at 5:30am this Sunday morning peeked outside to see it snowing, it had begun, the Nor'easter we'd all been hearing about since Monday last week. Went downstairs and started the coffee pot.

Chicken soup on the stove... Took the remaining vegetables carrots and celery, from the veggie drawer from the 'fridge, chopped them up, added some chicken stock and leftover chicken from dinner last night. Rose reminded me to add the spices, parsley, oregano, and pepper. It's going to be a good day for soup.

Snowblowed the walkway and out to the tractor, barn and workshop, made a few passes around the house for the dogs, and headed for the greenhouse, got a nice path done and looked over to see the sawbuck near the woodpile where Jarrod and I'd left it. I decided that where it's early in the season I'd better keep the woodpile clear so off I went. I'd cleared the 16+ inches away from the right side and thought I'd clear the left side too as it's always more fun sawing wood with two people. Then clunk! I knew that wasn't good, figured I'd hit a chunk of wood we'd missed in the fall, nope that's where we'd decided was a good place for the ladder. I stopped the tines and kicked them once they stopped, sure enough on side spun freely, I'd broken a shear pin. I limped the machine now plowing the snow instead of throwing it back to the house and went inside for a cup of coffee.

Off to the barn, hay'd and grain'd Lacey and Willow, gave them some old bread that they relish, a couple of carrot and celery ends for the rabbit.

Whitetails are back

There were threee whitetails here tonight. Appears to be one of the does from last year and her yearling. The third deer wouldn't stay close enough to the other two to make any of the pictures.

The Raised Bed Garden - 2007

Raised beds in the back yard, Tomatoes, Peppers, Broccoli, Onion, Turnip, Carrots, Kale and some Summer, Acorn, and Blue Hubbard Squash. Not exactly true to square foot gardening rules but we're close. This picture was taken in the evening as the sun sets on the front of the house. We will lose 1-2 hours of sun versus planting the main field, the difference is we can better watch this garden.

The Vegetable Garden

The Vegetable Garden was started today, the 6" raised beds were double dug and a good helping of straw, peat, layered with topsoil, a couple handfuls of 10-10-10 fertilizer along with some composted manure, for good measure. We're going to try some square foot gardening to increase our yields.

Using Google Maps To Get Free Phone Calls

Using Google Maps To Get Free Phone Calls

I recently discovered a fantastic new feature in Google Maps that can actually save me a lot of money. Here’s how it works.

Let’s say hypothetically that I’m sitting at work in the greater Des
Moines, Iowa area and I want to pick up a delicious pizza from Papa
Murphy’s on my way home from work. Unfortunately, though, I can’t call
out from work to non-business numbers, though I can receive phone
calls. Ah-ha! I go to Google Maps, type in “Papa Murphys West Des Moines IA and see the following:

Google Maps to Papa Murphys

See the “call” link I have circled in red? If you click that link,
you’ll be asked to enter your telephone number. As soon as you click
submit, your telephone will ring. Pick it up, wait a few seconds, and
you’re connected for free to the business. No charges to you
at all, and no outgoing call charges. This is spectacularly useful if
you have any sort of long distance charges or if you have outgoing call
charges on your telephone, whether it be a land line or a cellular
phone.

In general, this technique seems to work for most businesses - I
have used it to call dozens of businesses in the last several months
and I can only recall one that was not listed using this service. It
has been very useful for making restaurant reservations, calling
businesses to check on their hours, and so forth. It’s a great way to
utilize whatever phone is handy to make calls without eating away at my
cell phone minutes and without being dinged for outgoing call charges.

What’s the drawback? So far, I haven’t found a drawback - it’s not always useful, but quite often it can save me some cash.

Interesting little flash game

Happy New Year!

Well it's 2007... Happy New Year! I woke up this morning to an ice storm here in the Northeast. It's supposed to rain/sleet until around 10 am this morning. Hopefully we won't lose power. I'd like to get out to take some photographs of the ice later on if the rain lets up.
